All clay materials shrink in the firing process, each with a different shrinkage coefficient according to its mineral content. Combining clay materials of two different types (porcelain and stoneware), we make a flat ceramic bi-layer that develops internal stresses during the firing process. The frustrated ceramic material morphs in the firing kiln to its programmed shape, controlled parametrically through variables of thickness, material architecture and grooves.
Parametric Tiles demonstrate our ability to control the resulting shape through various fabrication parameters. All tiles enter the kiln as flat sheets, and morph into their final 3D shape, as programmed by their material architecture . The 108 tiles of the work demonstrate the potential of mouldless fabrication to obtain high variability in sustainable fabrication processes.
